    If one was looking for a book that took the right approach and tone to exploring life in Australia in the 1970s, without relying on dry as dust academic or scholarly histories, then Covington s book would be my first go to recommendation As a child of that period spending the years between four and fourteen living through the times described in this book I found it easy to find pleasure in Mondo Bizarro with its mixture of nostalgia, humour, pop culture, informative chapters and well selected images Whilst the term zeitgeist feels a bit clunky and cliched, I don t think it s too big a claim to make to say that Cockington captures zeitgeist of the 1970s in Australia most admirably.The book s style is a little like an old fashioned smorgasbord with various items being of interest and appeal than others For example, the chapter on Australian politics includes a well detailed timetable of the moments that led up to and followed the dismissal of the Whitlam government, a short look at the twisted nature of the Jim Cairns June Morosi affair, and the negative identity of and reaction to one time Federal Immigration minister Al Grassby Whilst these histories are only partially recounted and are hardly impartial, they engage th...
